Curriculum & Instruction

Delaware is one of 45 states that have formally adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in K-12 English Language Arts and Mathematics.  These standards define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education careers so that they will graduate high school able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs.

Christina School District is working to fully implement the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts (ELA). The key points of ELA include reading, writing, speaking and listening, language, and media and technology.

In grades K-5, students will benefit from engaging lessons exploring a variety of critical and creative thinking strategies, and the identification process will be expanded to include student portfolios and a short cognitive abilities test that is designed to discover the level of student reasoning. 

Our K-5 classrooms use the i-Ready Classroom Mathematics curriculum, a research-based program designed to build strong mathematical thinkers through engaging, inclusive, and effective learning experiences.

Christina School District is proud to work in partnership with the State of Delaware Science Coalition* to offer a science curriculum aligned with the State’s 2013 adoption of the nationally recognized research-based Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Guided by the Delaware Social Studies Standards, students explore civics, geography, history, and economics to develop critical thinking, inquiry, and problem-solving skills.  Through the study of democratic principles, global connections, historical perspectives, and economic decision-making, students learn to analyze complex issues, consider multiple viewpoints, and understand their roles in their communities and beyond.

Christina School District offers comprehensive art education with regular art classes through 6th grade and extensive extracurricular arts for all ages. Regular art "specials" are built into the curriculum, ensuring all students have consistent exposure to creative arts.
